Training in parenteral sedation allows dentists to safely and effectively treat patients who would otherwise not seek or receive dental care. This includes fearful patients and patients who simply desire sedation as part of complex treatment.

While many specialists offer sedation, they are typically not comfortable providing restorative work, such as complex operative restorations or crown preparations. For this reason, and to increase overall access to care, it is necessary to train general dentists in the appropriate use of parenteral sedation. Plus, it is a terrific practice builder!

Course Didactic Topics

  • Pain control, physiology of pain, psychology of pain
  • Cardiac rhythms
  • Pharmacology of sedative agents and emergency drugs
  • Airway management
  • Cardiac and pulmonary physiology
  • Emergency management
  • General anesthesia overview
  • Moderate sedation techniques and principles
  • Inhalation sedation
  • Venipuncture
  • History and physical and risk assessment
  • IV fluids, oxygen and monitors

Course Structure

This course follows ADA guidelines for moderate parenteral sedation courses, including 60 hours of didactic curriculum and 20+ clinical experiences.

The didactic education is delivered in three weekend sessions, held Friday-Saturday in July, August and November. Some material is presented in an online format. Most material is presented in a traditional lecture. Hands-on modules include venipuncture and demonstration sedations.

Following didactic training, course delegates are invited to return to the clinic to perform IV sedation on patients. (*Delegates must be licensed to practice dentistry in the USA and provide insurance at our location to work on patients.)

We believe our clinical experience separates us from other courses. Our delegates get individual cases, where you actually set the line, and you actually make decisions on giving medications. In other courses, you might be grouped with three or even four clinicians “sharing” a sedation experience. Basically watching it. But we want you to be confident to do sedation in your own office, and to accomplish this you need to do it in our office.

After your first 10 sedations, you will be encouraged to do dentistry while working on your sedated patient. Again, you need to practice like you will be working in your office, with responsibility for both the sedation and the clinical work.

Clinical sessions are scheduled with our faculty from Wednesday to Friday. You can expect to engage six to eight cases in this training time. Therefore, multiple sessions can be anticipated to achieve the ADA required 20 clinical experiences.

Tuition

The cost of this course is $16,500. This is one of the few courses in the country with intensive emergency drilling, actual “non-shared” patient experiences to gain the competency you need and the chance to do dental procedures on your own patient. We want you to train like you will be doing it in your own office – sedating and doing the dentistry at the same time! A deposit of $3,500 holds your spot in the course.
